Liverpool Commited to Taking Anfield Capacity Past 60,000

The club will let previous stadium expansion plans lapse in favour of something more ambitious—and bigger.

Having expanded Anfield’s main stand to raise the capacity of the stadium from a little more than 46,000 to 54,742 in 2016, the next stage for the club was always intended to be the expansion of the Anfield Road end.

Current filings had called for a relatively modest expansion, one that would have taken capacity to around 58,000, but recent months had seen renewed talk of a more ambitious expansion to take capacity beyond 60,000.

Today, the club have confirmed that they will go that route—that the approved expansion plans to take capacity to 58,000 will be allowed to lapse next month and they will apply with a new, more ambitious plan.

The club don’t commit to specifics, but do say the new, expanded Anfield Road will now involve a “larger scheme” than the previously submitted plans, while journalists with ties to the club cite the 60,000 threshold.

“The progress that has been made during ongoing feasibility studies has resulted in us being in a position to allow the outline planning permission to lapse,” read a statement from Liverpool COO Andy Hughes.

“We are committed to working with local residents, planning officials, and others as we now focus on the detail behind any proposed redevelopment. Our objective is to find the best possible solution for Anfield Road.”
