Liverpool “Know What It’s Going to Take” to Keep Winning Trophies

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says they know it won’t be easy, but that this team has what it takes.

Having won the Champions League, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says nobody at Liverpool will take that kind of success for granted or expect more trophies to be won with ease—not with everyone knowing first-hand how hard it was to capture that prize.

“We’ve had a taste of winning and we knew what it took to get there,” the midfielder told the club’s official website. “It was nowhere near easy. We know what it’s going to take, there are going to be moments that test us, and maybe new tests this year we didn’t face last year.

“We had to dig in, the boys dug in all last year through difficult moments, where you’re expected to win and still go out and win. We know there’s going to be tests and we know that’s what’s required.”

Already this season there have been tests. A Community Shield that saw Liverpool out-shoot and out-possess Manchester City but lose out on penalties—and then a Super Cup that saw Chelsea take them to penalties before the Reds won it.

Already there have been reminders of the difficulty of the league, too. Liverpool have six points, two wins against sides that on paper they should beat, but neither Norwich or Southampton made it easy for them.

Plus there was the short turnaround following the Super Cup, flying back from Istanbul and having to face Saints on two days rest—an early reminder of the kind of difficult scheduling and fixture overload that they will face often this season given their standing.

“We know what the demands are on each other,” Oxlade-Chamberlain added. “And I think that has grown in the team, there are more and more leaders coming out of this side—not just Hendo, Millie, Virg. Everyone is starting to take responsibility.

“It’s a team that’s really going in the right direction. But it’s early in the season. We’ve got to keep our feet on the ground, keep plugging away and keep churning out results.”
