Loan Watch: Harry Wilson Scores First Premier League Goal

The Liverpool winger scored on his Premier League debut for AFC Bournemouth

Harry Wilson is a curious and interesting player. A guy with the skills and talent, at a young enough age, to be considered one ready for the big show now. Carrying Derby County to a whisker of promotion, Wilson is very likely a player with the tools to make it in the Premier League.

Leading into this season, there was wonder and talk about how the club had evaluated his progression and fit. He is, for me, a player that best exemplifies what it is like to live on the bubble. Clearly a talent and one that quite a few teams could use coming into this season. But also not quite the right mix of skills for this iteration of Liverpool Football Club.

More, the seemingly open debate between wanting to give him a permanent deal before letting him out on loan to AFC Bournemouth gives the appearance that maybe, just maybe, the front office hasn't quite made its mind up yet on Wilson.

Well, this past weekend, the young man gave Jurgen Klopp and all of the other decision makers at Liverpool something to chew on.

In his Premier League debut, one in which he was named to the starting eleven, Harry Wilson scored what went on to be the deciding goal in Bournemouth’s tilt against Aston Villa. The goal was, what else, a long range attempt after Wilson beat everyone to a sloppy give away by Villa’s defenders. It was a good shot but it being deflected is likely what helped to see it into the back of the net.

Still, no one’s gonna remember that his first Premier League goal was off of a deflection, especially given that it came on the back end of keeping his head up and hustling to the loose ball. And that’s how Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp saw it as reports indicate that he immediately took to his phone to send Wilson a congratulatory message.

All told, it’s a positive outcome for the young winger. Here’s hoping he continues to gain meaningful minutes and important experience. All of it in service of hopefully cracking Liverpool’s rotation next season.
