Loan Watch: Oops Harry Wilson Did It Again

He scored from afar, but his team lost in the game.

Harry Wilson might be very, very good at a particular thing. Or, to put it in terms that the youth of today use: Harry Wilson only scores bangers.

This weekend, the Liverpool loanee scored the loan goal for AFC Bournemouth in their Premier League tilt against Manchester City by thumping home a free kick. The placement was perfect and, once more, Wilson showed his ability to put in goals from outside of the area.

Lots of questions exist around Wilson’s ability to make it in the Prem. Some of that is down to his athleticism which isn’t necessarily well-suited to allowing him to drive the ball forward to create space or to make a chance for someone else.

The thing is though, the man might not need it. This is his second goal in as many matches and while the first was done off of a deflection, there was nothing fluke-y or lucky about this particular shot. Wilson took a free kick from outside the area and placed it in the only spot that would result in a goal. Precision. Pace. All of it.

And none of this is a surprise if you followed the young lad’s loan spell last season with Derby County. Wilson seemed to be at the heart of most things going right for the Championship side in their ultimately failed bid for promotion, notching 15 goals in 40 appearances, 9 of which were scored from outside of the box per talkSport.

When you consider that only 2 of those were via free kick, it stands to reason that maybe Harry Wilson is, in fact, a player that only deals in bangers. Which at least one of our esteemed writers here at TLO towers seems to think.

For Harry Wilson to be statistically average at long shots, he would have to miss his next 130 attempts in a row.

Rounding out the goalscorer among Liverpool loanees this weekend are Ovie Ejaria and Ben Woodburn. Ejaria found the back of the net for Reading in their win against Huddersfield which, coincidentally, also featured a Liverpool loanee - Kamil Grabara - in goal. Woodburn, meanwhile, scored his first goal for Oxford United in their match against Bristol Rovers.

All told, one can only hope that the fortunes of these loanees continue to turn up roses. In this early start to the season, these three Liverpool loanees are certainly putting in the work to make the decision makers deeply consider looking elsewhere for an answer to the question of firepower on the offensive side of the pitch to back up our electric front three. We’ll, of course, keep a close eye on how the young guns develop throughout the course of the season.
