Rumor Mongering: Timo Werner and the Extra Low Release Clause

Liverpool have long been rumored to be interested in Werner. News about a new contract might breathe more life into this potential transfer

The transfer window slammed shut a few weeks ago but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t fresh transfer rumors for your favorite mongers to offer you. Today, we have one featuring RB Leipzig’s versatile star forward, Timo Werner.

For those who may have forgotten, Werner is one of the few young, talented strikers with the type of versatility and work rate to offer hope at replacing the seemingly irreplaceable Roberto Firmino as Liverpool’s striker of the future. Capable of playing anywhere across the attacking band and with a motor for high-intensity work to boot, Werner and Liverpool seem a match made in Heaven.

However, with his obvious talent being, well, obvious, Liverpool clearly face a few suitors who value his services. Couple that with Leipzig’s desire to continue to push for the top spaces in the Bundesliga, and it meant that Liverpool saw this summer close by calling Leipzig’s bluff to wait through, even though Werner only had a year remaining on his contract, until a bid that met their valuation was received. No such bid came, so Werner entered this season as he began the last: wearing a Leipzig shirt.

The news today, though, is that the young forward has signed a new four-year contract with Leipzig. Normally, this would be the type of news that would quell further rumors, but the actual news here is that apparently the new deal has a rather low release clause attached. According to the report, the clause sits at €30 million which is a pittance for a player as well rated as Werner.

Naturally, the link to Liverpool is immediately brought up in the reports of this move. The reasoning here being that the release clause is so low that it would help facilitate, after one more year of service to Leipzig, a move to a bigger club. A move that, per most quotes from the player indicate is a real priority.

Whether or not this means Liverpool will find themselves in the running for Werner is, of course, speculation. The club has a lot of belief in the young legs of Rhian Brewster and also has the likes of Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent, and Ben Woodburn to sort out. But, of course, none of that would preclude a move for an established striker in one of Europe’s biggest leagues should he come available.

It looks to be, then, at least one more year of Timo-to-Liverpool rumors. Buckle up, folks.
