Liverpool Full Backs Have Different Feelings on International Form

Positivity for Trent while Andy Robertson is frustrated at Scotland’s frailties.
Ask Liverpool fans to pick a favourite between Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold and it could take a while.
Liverpool have emphasised attacking through the full backs more and more as both have proven to be vital creative outlets. It’s only natural that they feature for their countries, though things are not going evenly.
For Alexander-Arnold, he feels things are really positive for England.
“Everyone is relaxed and refreshed by the start of the new season”, he mentioned in the England vs Bulgaria match programme. “We’re really keen to get under way and we’re really excited to try and qualify for the Euros. We started the campaign well and it’s now about trying to keep pushing forward.
“The way the last year has gone for me isn’t something I could ever really have imagined. Myself and my family are over the moon with how things have gone and it has been an incredible year, but it’s all down to the hard work put in over the years.
“I’m grateful for the managers for giving me a chance, and for all the past coaches who have given me the opportunities to get to where I am today”.
It’s delightful to hear that he’s in such a good mood, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for Robertson. The Scotland captain was involved in a very poor performance as his country lost to Russia, going ahead early but seemingly lacking any mental resilience.
“There’s frustration, annoyance, everything that goes along with it”, Sky Sports report him saying after the game. “You can feel it from the stands and we’ve only got ourselves to blame for that, they’ve got every right. It wasn’t good enough.
“I’m annoyed with everything. My performance, what the rest of the lads done, all of us except David Marshall really. To have 10 players from the start not really showing up and putting in the performances we can is never going to win you a game of football.”
As good as it is to see him honestly reflect on his side’s failings, it’s not great that he’s going to be returning to Melwood frustrated. But this is the nature of international football. You give up control of the players and anything can happen. Alexander-Arnold should hopefully bring confidence back with him, but let’s hope Robertson can be picked up quickly with a win for his country before he comes back.
