Virgil van Dijk Agrees to New Contract

Harry Maguire’s transfer has a knock on effect
Any doubt that there might be a future without Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool has been put to rest as the defender has reportedly agreed to a new contract, according to the Mirror. The deal apparently has a lot to do with Harry Maguire signing for Manchester United this past summer. The UEFA Player of the Year’s representatives had been working with Liverpool on a new deal, but the Maguire transfer to rivals Manchester United gave them a benchmark number to work with. van Dijk is obviously better than Maguire and should be paid accordingly.
When Liverpool signed the £75m dutch defender from Southampton, they had signed him to a base salary of £125k-a-week. This new deal is reportedly worth a base salary of £200k-a-week, which is in the same neighborhood of what Liverpool pays Mo Salah. The deal will keep van Dijk in Liverpool until 2025.
His original deal was stocked full of bonus clauses for the defender to get paid more, such as bonuses for clean sheets. This new deal has a much higher base pay and isn’t reliant on bonuses for the defender.
Oh, and in case your wondering, Liverpool are still paying van Dijk less than what Manchester United is paying Alexis Sanchez to play for a different team.
