Italian journalist Nico Schira has been cited by the Express as reporting that Virgil van Dijk is a player that Zinedine Zidane is a fan of but the player is happy at Liverpool.
The journo, who works for Calcio Mercato, reports that van Dijk is happy at Anfield and has no intention of leaving Merseyside to join Real Madrid.
The Dutchman won UEFA Player of the Year for 2019 at a banquet late last month and is the favourite to win the Balon d’Or after transforming Liverpool from top-four hopefuls into Champions League winners.
With the former Southampton skipper at the back, there is a good chance the Reds can end their Premier League title drought this season if they can fend off Pep Guardiola’s incredible Manchester City.
It’s a sign of the times that van Dijk has no interest in ditching Liverpool for Real Madrid or Barcelona in the way the likes of Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho have in the last decade.
Jurgen Klopp has worked miracles as Liverpool manager and his best signing is without a doubt van Dijk. The centre back has proved to be the difference between winning silverware and being just another member of the Premier League ‘Big Six.’
Reports last week that van Dijk was closing in on a new six-year contract have been rubbished but the hope remains that he will soon put pen to paper and extend his terms.
