Liverpool interested in signing James Maddison

Liverpool are reportedly interested in rivalling Manchester United to sign James Maddison in the coming transfer windows.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein claims that United are keen on taking the former Norwich City star from The King Power Stadium to Old Trafford but there are more attractive destinations in the Premier League.

Liverpool and Spurs are named as interested parties with Manchester City not understood to place the same value on recruiting the England international as the others.

For the Reds, signing Maddison should be a priority next summer but it will require a huge investment to complete.

The Foxes managed to squeeze £80million out of Manchester United in exchange for Harry Maguire so it seems prudent to imagine they will ask for even more to let Maddison go.

The London Evening Standard reported in June that Leicester values him at £70m but that could go up if the Foxes keep firing on all cylinders this season.

Brendan Rodgers’ side is very ambitious and their high position in the Premier League backs this up. The Northern Irishman is targeting European qualification this season and appears as though he could manage it with a fully fit squad.

Liverpool can offer Maddison Champions League football and the chance to win silverware and so should be able to lure him away from United or Spurs but only at the right price.

Given the competition for game time in Liverpool’s midfield, it seems unlikely that Jurgen Klopp would spend so much on a player that isn’t necessarily guaranteed to start.

Is he better than a fully fit Naby Keita? I’m not so sure. It’s similar to the Matthijs de Ligt situation; Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are good enough and so are Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Nonetheless, Maddison is a fabulous player and would be unreal under Klopp.
