Michael Owen compares Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to other great Premier League sides

Michael Owen.

Former Red Michael Owen believes that the squad Jurgen Klopp has assembled at Liverpool is as good as some of greatest English teams of the Premier League era.

Klopp, who arrived at Anfield back in 2015, has assembled a squad that has been able to keep the pace with a formidable Manchester City side.

Liverpool fell agonisingly short in the Premier League last season, as a further two points would have been enough to defeat the Citizens to the title. The Reds have not won a league title since the 1989-90 season.

Despite the fact this current crop of players have not won a Premier League title yet, Owen believes Klopp’s Liverpool still remains as one of the best sides to grace the English game.

“Winning the Premier League is the holy grail for Liverpool now but apart from that can it get any better? This is one of the best club teams we have seen in our lifetime,” said Owen on BT Sport.

“It’s a phenomenal team and it’s right up there with the great Manchester United sides, Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and Man City. It’s just an unbelievable team.

“I said last season it was going to be either Liverpool or Man City who wins the Champions League and I think it’s going to be the same again. The Premier League is the strongest competition at the moment and Liverpool are that team who is stronger than anyone.”

Owen does raise a fair point in regards to the quality of the current Liverpool squad. There is class all across the pitch, which has allowed the club to gain consistency in the league.

The Reds have finished in the top four for three consecutive seasons. However, this Liverpool squad do need to win a Premier League title, as silverware is how many judge success in football.
