Pundit names Liverpool as Champions League favourites

BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves believes Liverpool are the favourites to win the Champions League this season.

The Reds will face Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. Jurgen Klopp’s side will travel to Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday February 18, before a return meeting at Anfield on Wednesday March 11.

Liverpool won the Champions League last season 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid, but Hargreaves believes Klopp’s team have the ability to go back-to-back.

Speaking to BT Sport, Hargreaves said: “I think before everybody wanted to avoid Barcelona and Real Madrid, I think now everybody wants to avoid Liverpool.

“This team has virtually every style of play necessary and for me they’re the heavy favourites in this competition. I think maybe Barca and Manchester City are just in behind.”

Hargreaves added: “Atletico Madrid they’re not challenging in La Liga at the minute. Liverpool, as we’ve mentioned, I don’t think they’ll fear anybody.

“I fancy Liverpool to go through in that one.”

The Premier League is clearly the objective this season, but Liverpool proved last season they can challenge on both fronts.

Given the experience Liverpool have gained in recent times within Europe’s elite competition, Hargreaves is correct that the Reds have every chance of claiming a seventh European Cup this season.

The Reds are yet to lose a two-legged European knockout tie under Klopp, which highlights how strong his side have been in Europe.

The clash against Atletico Madrid will be challenging, but the Anfield factor should prove too much for the Spanish giants.
