Gary Lineker provides verdict on Roberto Firmino’s disallowed goal

England legend Gary Lineker believes that Roberto Firmino’s first-half strike against Manchester United at Anfield yesterday should have counted.

The Reds defeated arch-rivals Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield in the Premier League yesterday thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. Liverpool now possess a 16-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.

However, Liverpool’s winning margin could have been greater had Firmino’s goal not been overturned by VAR.

Van Dijk had apparently fouled Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea before Firmino had scored, which was why the goal was disallowed. However, Lineker believes the goal should have stood.

Lineker tweeted: “Not sure that was a clear and obvious error, if an error at all.”

Lineker’s view was the view of many Liverpool supporters. One can see why the goal was not given, but it was a very soft decision in my opinion.

Van Dijk had hardly touched De Gea, and there certainly was not a obvious error from the referee to begin with.

However, that is in the past now. Liverpool’s next Premier League clash is against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium come Thursday night.
