Paul Merson makes huge call regarding Liverpool

Former Arsenal footballer Paul Merson believes that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could win the Premier League and Champions League this season.

The Reds currently possess a 13-point lead with two games in hand in the Premier League. In terms of the Champions League, Liverpool will face Atletico Madrid in the last 16.

Merson believes that Liverpool are in such a strong position that they will be able to rest players for the Champions League when it comes around.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “What they have done so far this season has now given them a massive chance of going on to retain the Champions League.

“About four months ago, I thought they had no chance of winning it because I thought everything would be in the Premier League.

“Now they have won the Premier League, I think they can win the Champions League. I think they will be in a position to rest players and make 10 changes for the Atletico game.”

Merson does make a fair point. If Liverpool can wrap the Premier League title up relatively soon, the club will be in a position to go all out for the Champions League.

Of course, there is the argument that the club should be looking to break the records within the Premier League, but claiming another Champions League trophy would be terrific for Klopp’s team.

Plenty has to go right for the club to claim both trophies, but there is absolutely no reason why they can’t do it.
