Phil Babb urges Reds to sign Serie A defender

Former Red Phil Babb has stated that Liverpool should look to sign Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

Koulibaly has been immense for Napoli in recent times, which has seen the defender linked with a number of big teams.

Liverpool have seen Koulibaly first-hand for the past two seasons, as the Reds have faced Napoli in the Champions League in both the 2018-19 campaign and the 2019-20 campaign.

Babb believes that it is very difficult for Jurgen Klopp to improve his current first XI as it is so strong, but he does feel the inclusion of Koulibaly would enhance the defence.

Speaking in an interview with Gambling.com, as quoted by The Sport Review, Babb said: “As a fan and a broadcaster I wonder where [Jurgen] Klopp can improve the squad and I’d probably say they might want to look at bringing in another top, top centre-half.

“That’s only because of the injury records of Gomez, Matip and Dejan Lovren. Virgil van Dijk is like a thoroughbred horse, very rarely gets injured, and if he could have another world class centre-half constantly alongside side him that would bolster Liverpool.

“Can you imagine Virgil van Dijk and Kalidou Koulibaly together? That would be some centre-half partnership.”

Koulibaly is a class defender and there is no denying he would improve Liverpool’s defence. However, with both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez performing so well in recent times, the need for a centre-back is not quite present at the moment.

Klopp won’t bring in a player for the sake of it. Koulibaly is 28 years of age, meaning time is against him. Gomez is still only 22 years of age, so it is unlikely that this transfer will occur.

Babb did raise a fair point in regards to the injury records of both Matip and Gomez. However, surely those two will eventually get a bit of luck in that department.
