Alan Shearer questions one decision Jurgen Klopp made for the Shrewsbury clash

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp should have been in attendance for Liverpool’s FA Cup replay clash against Shrewsbury Town at Anfield last night.

Klopp and his senior players all took the night off to honour the inaugural Premier League winter break, which meant Reds under-23 boss Neil Critchley had the job of leading a very young Liverpool team against Shrewsbury.

Klopp’s decision to rest his senior players proved the right one, as the kids claimed a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury courtesy of a Ro-Shaun Williams own goal.

However, Shearer believes that Klopp should have at least been in attendance, rather than away on holiday.

“I understand his point in terms of his players having a break that they were told they were going to have,” Shearer said, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“He is the manager of that football club, he can put whatever team he wants out to try and get the result.

“What doesn’t sit easy with me is that he is the manager, for me he should be there at the ground this evening giving the support to those young players that he’s picked.

“He can still have his holiday. He can get on a plane tonight somewhere and go wherever he wants for five or six days.

“But in terms of the team he’s picked, I haven’t got a problem with that.

“It looks as though they’re doing well and enjoying it.”

The view that Shearer has is the view that many others also have. However, managers also do need a break.

Liverpool are about to enter a crucial stage of their season, which means everyone needs to be ready to go.

Besides, Liverpool won the game, so what is all the fuss about? Klopp’s decision was vindicated across the board.
