Atletico Madrid defender expected to miss Liverpool Champions League clash

Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier is expected to miss the first leg of the Champions League clash against Liverpool due to injury.

The Reds face the Spanish giants in the competition’s last 16 this month, with the first leg on February 18 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. The second leg takes place on March 3 at Anfield.

Trippier has suffered a groin strain, according to the Guardian. The defender underwent surgery yesterday, which means he will return in approximately a month.

It has been reported striker Alvaro Morata could miss the first leg, also. Atletico Madrid currently have eight players unavailable.

Trippier would be a loss for the Spanish giants. He has been quite successful at Atletico Madrid since making the move from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2019.

Even if Trippier were available, the Liverpool front three would be confident of breaching Atletico Madrid’s goal.

However, this will be a challenging contest, as the Spanish giants are quite a solid defensive unit. Regardless of that being the case, Liverpool are the reigning champions for a reason.
