Joe Gomez outlines Liverpool’s 2020 Champions League objective

Reds centre-back Joe Gomez has stated that Liverpool are looking to win the Champions League again this season.

The Reds won the competition last season by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Despite having already won the tournament before, Gomez has stated that Liverpool are far from settled and are ultimately looking to win it again this season.

The Reds face Atletico Madrid in the competition’s last 16 this month, with the first leg on February 18 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. The second leg takes place on March 3 at Anfield.

Gomez said, as quoted by the Irish Independent: “It gives you belief, winning a trophy of that calibre. It’s a platform that we are trying to use. It gave us a memory – but that is what it is: a memory.

“We want to do it again. The competition resets each year for a reason. We want to keep ourselves in the history books.”

This is the mentality of a team of winners. The great sides don’t win one trophy. Since Liverpool have claimed the 2019 Champions League trophy, they have gone on and won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

It is also likely that Liverpool will win the Premier League title this season, as they currently possess a 25-point lead at the top of the table.

If Jurgen Klopp’s side could add another European Cup to the collection, it would very much be the season that all Liverpool supporters have dreamt of over the years.
