Karius: I Am Looking For A New Club But Am Comfortable At Liverpool

The former Liverpool no. 1 admitted to being at a career crossroad.

Like it or not, it appears that Loris Karius is tied to Liverpool for the time being.

The German keeper has a had a rough two-year spell, bookended by a calamitous performance in the 2018 Champions League final and a disastrous loan spell that came to a stuttering end this past May. Now back at Anfield, the 26-year-old finds himself without a clear understanding on the next step in his career.

He is arguably a better option to backup first-choice Alisson than the gaffe-prone Adrián. However, the latter’s affable team-first attitude has quickly made both a fan favorite and popular within the squad, standing in stark contrast to the broody Karius.

With seemingly no route into the squad, the German has admitted that starting afresh elsewhere might be the only choice:

“Of course, I have to play if I am going to change clubs,” Karius said speaking to Transfermarkt. “It makes no sense to say: ‘I’m leaving Liverpool for a worse club and I’m only number two there’,’ he added.

“But I’m not in a pressure situation at all, I don’t have to change.

“I can move forward in training at Liverpool. As the second-choice goalkeeper in England you know that you get your chances.

“I am currently at the best club in the world, play for titles, have the highest level around me every day in training. I am fully aware that I am in a good position to be in Liverpool. I have great conditions there.”

A move has its own complications, however. While there have been some noises of a team or two swooping in to rescue the ex-Mainz stopper, it is hard to imagine there being many clubs, already cash-strapped by a pandemic-ravaged season, lining up to spend their limited transfer funds on a player considered to be tarnished.

Someone give Marina Granovskaia over at Chelsea a call. She seems to be flush with cash these days.
