Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool “Relieved” to Return to Contact Training

The Liverpool right back is excited to be stepping up preparations for the return of football.

If everything goes according to plan, as of today we are less than three weeks away from the restart of the Premier League’s 2019-20 season, with Liverpool expected to face Everton on Saturday, July 20th. Given everything that’s happened in recent months, at times it hardly seems real.

But it is; football is coming back. And it took a step closer over the past week as players resumed contact training and coronavirus testing continued to come back negative, with zero new players or staff testing positive. Which has Trent Alexander-Arnold in a positive mood.

“It has been positive to be back with the boys,” said the Liverpool man. “That was the main thing we’ve all been missing. It’s just really positive, everyone is in a good mood and good spirits. Obviously it’s safety first, but when we get into training it’s good to be back to normal.

“The week before we came in as little groups of four and five. To take it the step further to train with everyone was something very relieving. It has been a long time since we’ve been able to do it, it is very rare you go so long without seeing the lads and training together. So, it was such a positive moment for us all.”

While valid questions about the return of sport in England remain, the noises out of the Liverpool camp have at least been universally positive—the players and coaching staff all appear to genuinely want to be coming back, and to feel safe in the training environment at Melwood as they prepare.

“We obviously know the circumstances won’t be the same as how we left them and the conditions won’t be,” Alexander-Arnold added. “But it is what it is. It’s football, we need to adapt to that. We’re going to try our best to adapt to that.

“I’m sure when the time comes to play matches again we’ll be ready for that, we’ll be as sharp as ever and hopefully we get straight back into winning ways and push on and see what we can do for the rest of the season.”
