Rhian Brewster’s Says Hard Work Is Key and “Goals Are a Bonus”

The young striker has been a standout in Liverpool’s condensed pre-season.

With a short pre-season due to coronavirus, Liverpool’s youth and fringe players don’t have nearly as long to stake a claim to a first team role as they might most summers. Short time or not, though, Rhian Brewster has done everything he can to impress.

Following a solid half against Stuttgart in the first friendly, Brewster was given thirty minutes against Salzburg in the second—and he only went and scored a brace while showing strong link-up play with fellow forward and pre-season standout Takumi Minamino.

“It’s good to come on and score two but it’s just working hard and trying to impress,” said the 20-year-old forward, who excelled on loan with Swansea in the second half of last season but headed into pre-season with questions about his future.

On the early evidence, at least, those questions appear settled, as it’s difficult to imagine Brewster being loaned out when he looks the club’s most likely option to score a goal after the starting attackers Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, and Mohamed Salah.

“To come on and score two was very good,” he added. “But for me, it’s not about the goals at the moment, it’s about working hard and running for the team and that’s what I’m trying to do. Of course you want to make the most of everything.

“You never know when it’s going to be your last game and stuff like that. Every game that I get I’m going to work hard and try my best. You’ve got to try to impress the manager, I’m trying to do that, I’m trying to work hard. The goals are a bonus.”
