Jürgen Klopp Insists “No Rush” for New Signings Thiago and Jota to Make Impact

The Liverpool manager is preaching patience when it comes to expectations for Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota.

Just about ten days ago now, quite a few Liverpool fans were fretting over the lack of signings. Just about a week ago now, they were celebrating the arrivals of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich and Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton.

The mood shifted from concerns about potential stagnation to celebrating a successful summer in a matter of days. Manager Jürgen Klopp, though, is preaching caution and a bit of patience when it comes to the club’s two new stars.

“At this time of the year, even in a Covid year, it is for some people the most exciting time of the year,” Klopp said ahead of Monday’s Premier League kickoff against challengers Arsenal. “Everyone talks about signings and who is coming in.

“Then all of a sudden we announce Thiago Alcantara and obviously that is completely normal [but the new players] just need a little time to get used to it in moments, to counter-press, stuff like this. It will not take ages but will take time.”

The first impressions for Thiago at least were that time wouldn’t be needed, with an impressive 45 minutes in the second half for the Spanish international against Chelsea last week. Chelsea, though, had been put down to ten men.

Whether or not he’s involved tonight—with results of a late fitness test still not made public—the real measure of Thiago’s impact, and of Jota’s and earlier summer signing Kostas Tsimikas, will be in the coming weeks and months.

“There is no rush,” Klopp added. “No need to say that if you don’t play tomorrow we have absolutely no chance. That is something I really like, that we can bring them in, in the right moment, in the right situation.”
