Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Make Ismaïla Sarr Enquiry
The Watford winger is under consideration and could be had for £36M.
Liverpool’s signing of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich hasn’t even officially been announced and we’re already on to the next one. The next big rumour; the next potential signing; the next captivating transfer saga.
For many, the who won’t come as a huge shock. It’s Ismaïla Sarr, Watford’s 22-year-old Senegalese winger, with The Mail’s Dominic King claiming the Reds have enquired as to his availability and that Watford would want £36M for him.
The latter is a number that is already down from reports a month ago that said the relegated Hornets would want in excess of £40M for the player, who they signed from Rennes in Ligue 1 a year ago for a fee of around £30M.
Combined with wages potentially in the £80k per week range, and assuming a £36M fee was paid out over four years and included at least some add-ons, it could mean a year-one commitment of £10-12M for the Reds.
By comparison, a deal for Timo Werner—paid over three years, with wages more than twice as high, and with reportedly exorbitant signing-on and agent fees—could easily have seen a year-one commitment of more than three times that amount.
While Sarr isn’t at Werner’s level now, he does look an especially promising young wide attacker, a player two years younger than the German who has made no secret of his idolisation of international teammate Sadio Mané.
With Liverpool needing depth for Mané and opposite-side winger Mohamed Salah, a move to Anfield as understudy to the duo could make a lot of sense for Sarr while filling a position of significant need for the club.
