Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Still Want Ismaila Sarr or Ousmane Dembele

Reports out of France claim the Reds aren’t done in the transfer market.

We’ll just put it out there right off the top and say straight up that we aren’t buying what the rumour mongers in France are selling today. Which is that despite the signing of Diogo Jota, Liverpool are still looking to make a big attacking signing.

Namely, that they’re still talking to Watford about the possibility of signing Ismaila Sarr as well as to Barcelona about perhaps bringing in Ousmane Dembele on loan—potentially with an option to buy the 23-year-old French attacking player.

Realistically, it’s hard to see where another attacker fits in with Takumi Minamino looking a capable understudy to Roberto Firmino while the talented 23-year-old Jota has arrived for a significant fee to cover Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané.

Even leaving Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi out of the equation, with Liverpool having a world class attacking trio—fully settled and with exceptional fitness records—the minutes for a player like Sarr or Dembele just don’t seem to be there.

It’s also worth noting that in Sarr’s case, reports from journalists with ties to the club said he was one of three attackers under consideration along with Jota and Lille’s young Canadian international Jonathan David. And the Reds picked Jota.

It seems safe, then, to rule that side of the rumour out entirely. As for Dembele, depending on Barcelona’s financials there might be a way to make a deal seem too good to pass up, but we don’t buy it’s something the club are actively seeking.

Even then, it’s far more likely to simply be a case of an outlet knowing Barcelona want to offload players and that Liverpool have semi-regularly been linked with Dembele and putting them together as the easy transfer rumour.
