Caoimhin Kelleher Has Had A Good Week
The praise has flown in for the young goalkeeper.
22 year-old Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin (pronounced kwee-veen) Kelleher has come a long way since his days in Cork, Ireland playing for local side Ringmahon Rangers. He started his playing time as a striker, but subbed in as keeper one day when the team’s regular goalkeeper quit. His qualities were eventually noticed by Liverpool’s extensive scouting network in Ireland, after just three years of youth football, iNews reports.
His role as Liverpool’s second choice keeper came about in similar circumstances, when a hamstring injury to Alisson Becker and a series of shaky displays by Adrian prompted Jurgen Klopp to offer Kelleher the #2 spot.
And he is buzzing after an excellent performance at AFC Ajax. “After the game, for the manager to come up to me - it was a nice moment for me. I wasn’t expecting it so it was a nice moment”, he said.
“My phone was buzzing for about three days after the game! Just [with messages] from friends, from former coaches, family, everyone really.
“Alisson texted me as well just to say ‘well done’ and that he was proud of me and stuff. All the messages were nice and supportive so it was really nice to get all of them.
“It’s been a decent week for me! What can I say, two debuts in one week was a bit of a mad one so it’s been a good week.”
He also impressed in the game against Wolves on Sunday, looking assured on his feet.
“Definitely on the weekend I felt more comfortable after playing midweek,” he added.
“I think the more games I play, the more comfortable I’m feeling.”
