Caoimhin Kelleher Thrilled At Champions League Heroics
The substitute made all the difference in Liverpool’s win over Ajax.
You know you did good when you’re the first one to get that all important Klopp Hug. When the final whistle sounded on Liverpool’s win over Ajax, the boss wasted no time heading straight for the star of the night, Caoimhin Kelleher.
Kelleher was the hero on a night when so many good chances just weren’t making it into the back of the net for Liverpool. Salah should have had a hat trick, and yet it was only Curtis Jones, with a clever, lucky touch who managed to score the game’s only goal.
Despite the frustration up front, Kelleher stepped into the big shoes of Alisson, who was out with a hamstring injury, and stubbornly refused to let anything past his lanky frame. He made several impresses saves to deny Ajax of the equalizer that were desperate for, including Klaas-Jan Huntelaar at point blank range.
After the game, the goalkeeper spoke to the official site about his huge night and how it felt to help his team qualify for the round of 16.
“Just over the moon really with how the whole night went for me and for the whole team to get the win and to qualify. Just delighted,” Kelleher admitted, to the surprise of no one.
Regarding his big, late game save, he said, “Obviously I’m happy to do it, just to keep the team in it and get three points. That’s what I’m there for and thankfully tonight I was able to help the team.“
Kelleher has made a huge impression, and Klopp often rewards strong performances, so it would be no surprise to see him back again at the weekend when Liverpool take on Wolves.
