The captain thought it was one of Liverpool’s best performances of the season.

Reds around the world are celebrating Liverpool’s huge last-minute victory over Tottenham tonight. It was the kind of performance that has eluded the injury-plagued side in recent weeks, and the fact that it came against the team at the top of the Premier League table makes it extra special.

Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson, was understandably thrilled with the result, and his pride in the team’s performance was clear in his post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video.

“I would say it was one of our best performances of the season, personally,” said the captain. “With the ball, without the ball, the counter-press was really good, winning the ball back high up, relentless with the pressure. I’m over the moon, as you can see.”

The English midfielder did admit that Spurs’ goal was a bit of a letdown because they were expecting Tottenham to rely on quick counters and should have been ready for it. However, with the overall performance taken into account, especially the relentless push to search for a late winner, Henderson felt the win was deserved (unlike a very bitter Portuguese manager who shall remain nameless).

“I thought it was a good game – very tactical and probably what you expected a little bit in terms of us dominating with the ball, creating chances, and then [we] get done on the counter in the first half,” said Henderson.

“We’ll be disappointed with that because we knew that was the case, but overall I thought the performance was outstanding. I thought we dominated for large periods with the ball, we created some good chances and never stopped – kept going right until the end and got the winner which I think we deserved.”

Rhys Williams also earned the skipper’s praise for his performance in his first Premier League start. Henderson was pleased with both the young defender’s play and his vocal leadership at the back.

“I told you before the game he had been outstanding and I hoped for the same tonight and he was outstanding again. He was one of the best players on the park, he won the majority of things in the air, defended, I could hear him talking all the time, for such a young lad.”

Despite the incredible performance that propelled Liverpool back into the top spot on the Premier League table, by the end of the interview Henderson was already trying to shift the focus to the match against Crystal Palace this weekend.

“We’re delighted with the three points. And our focus has now got to be on the weekend, which comes quick against Palace, who are a very good side, as you know. They have got some very good results of late, so that will be a tough test for us.”
