Robertson Cautions Against Reading Too Much Into Victory Over Tottenham

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

There’s a lot of season left and the title race is going to be tight warns Liverpool’s Andy Robertson.

Liverpool’s victory over Tottenham on Wednesday evening has the feel of something that matters. The kind of result that could help to define the Reds’ season as they look to defend their first league title in three decades.

One look at the table, though, as congested as this compressed Premier League season, should be enough to dissuade anyone of such thoughts. Wednesday’s win was a valuable three points, but there’s a long way to go.

“It’s only big if you use it in the right way,” was star left back Andy Robertson’s take following his impressive performance in the late 2-1 victory. “We’re top of the league for tonight but there’s still a long, long way to go.

“But it’s a big win against a really good team. We created good chances, dominated the ball first half. The second half was a bit more even, but we’ve beaten a good team tonight and it’s always nice when you can do that.”

Beating Tottenham sends Liverpool clear in first a third of the way into the 2020-21 campaign, but they’re still only five points clear of Everton in fifth—and just eight points away from Wolves, who currently sit tenth.

They’re also eight points clear of Manchesters City and United, with City holding a game in hand and United holding two. Beating Spurs was a big win against a very good side, but there’s a long way to go in a very tight race.

“They’ll come back again and we need to be at our best every game to stay top now because there’s a lot of teams trying to catch us,” Robertson added. “It’s a lot closer race this year and it will go the whole way.”
