Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Target Renato Sanches as Wijnaldum Replacement
The chatter in France has Jürgen Klopp having identified Sanches—now at Lille—as a top midfield target.
For a time, every top club seemed to be linked with Renato Sanches, with the Portuguese midfielder for a time consistently rated amongst Europe’s top prospects. In the end, he got a move to Bayern Munich in a deal reportedly worth up to €80M.
It’s fair to say that what’s happened since has been a failure to live up to both promise and price tag. First there was his disappointing time at Bayern, then a disappointing loan to Swansea, and in the end a €25M move to Lille in the summer of 2019.
Now, though, into his second season in France and still just 23 years of age, Sanches is beginning to be linked with moves back to bigger clubs. In particular, Le10Sport believe Jürgen Klopp and the Liverpool recruitment team are watching.
The claim is that with Sanches having begun to once again show some of the talents that earned him his move to Bayern back when he was still a teenager, the Reds have him as a top target—maybe even the top target—to replace Gini Wijnaldum.
A once world class talent still shy of his prime years who could salvage his career working under Klopp does have a certain ring to it. Given how poorly Sanches’ time at Bayern went, though, it’s a move that would be quite a gamble.
