Because a young defender with extensive injury history is exactly what Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp want right now.

Honestly, I’m surprised there haven’t been more transfer rumors involving defenders. If you haven’t noticed, we have a wee bit of an injury crisis at center back after our top two defenders, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, dropped out of the squad for the season.

One reason why we haven’t seen more “Liverpool interested in [insert defender]” stories is because other teams (strange concept, I know) are also going through injury crises of their own.

For example, RB Leipzig has had ongoing injury issues with Ibrahima Konaté. Since the 2018/19 campaign, when the then 19-year-old Konaté racked up 31 appearances for Leipzig—including 27 Bundesliga starts—the player has had over 300 days on the injured list. This includes a torn muscle fiber, which kept him out of the side from October 2019 to May 2020, and a problem with a hip flexor muscle, that kept him out form May to October this year.

So, a player who has been injured for practically the last year? Sounds like someone Michael Edwards would defo be targeting. Also, these aren’t freak-occurrence contact injuries. These are muscle and soft tissue injuries. And we know from the painful recent experience of watching Daniel Sturridge struggle for fitness, a player with a history muscle injuries tends to continue picking up these kinds of injuries.

This is all to say that the German publication Bild linked Ibrahima Konaté to Liverpool. And that is probably bullshit.

If there are any senior defenders still standing in Europe come January, we’ll probably be heavily linked to them. Carry on.
