Trent Alexander-Arnold on Captaining Liverpool: “It’s Always Been a Dream”
The 22-year-old Scouser wore the Liverpool captain’s armband for the first time against FC Midtjylland.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom over the past few seasons. At just 22, he is a locked on starter for a team that has won a Champion’s League title, a Premier League title, and a Club World Cup in the last two seasons. Along the way he has racked up numerous awards and broken records for assists as he’s proven to be one of the best fullbacks in football.
On Wednesday night he added another milestone to an already impressive young career, and this one was especially meaningful to the Liverpool native. When the Reds took the field against FC Midtjylland, Alexander-Arnold was wearing the captain’s armband, and it was very clear how much it meant to the young Englishman.
“An extremely proud moment for me and the people who have helped me do that,” Alexander-Arnold told LiverpoolFC.com. “You’ve obviously got to give thanks to the manager and the staff who chose me to captain the team tonight. It was a really proud night for me on a personal note. I think I’ll look back on tonight with fond memories as being captain for the first time.”
As a native Scouser, a lifelong Red, and a graduate of the Liverpool academy, Alexander-Arnold grew up imagining captaining Liverpool, and he is one of the special few who has been able to see that fantasy become reality.
“Obviously it’s always been a dream, it’s always special to play on Champions League nights. To lead the team out was incredibly proud, it was something that was different, new to me. It was special. It felt special out there.”
Trent wasn’t the one who took pride in this latest milestone. He was able to tell several family members that he would be captaining the side before kickoff, and it was special for his whole family.
“Yeah, I only told a few people, to be fair. I kept it quite close to my chest and didn’t want to make it bigger than what it was. I tried to focus on the game as much as possible but I think the people that needed to know knew. It was a proud moment for the family.”
Ever the professional, the right-back is now looking ahead to the Champion’s League knockout rounds, and he is confident that Liverpool will be a threat to whoever has the misfortune of being drawn against them.
“Yeah, now the fun begins really. The knockout stages, this is where the best teams perform and get through. It’s important to do, it’s never easy. You’re not looking at it now and seeing any easy draws but it’s exciting. I think on our day we’ll be able to beat anyone.”
