Liverpool’s Potential Round of 16 Champions League Opponents
We will face a team that placed second in their group. No English teams.
We’ve known for a week that Liverpool FC were going to finish on top of their Champions League group, but now we know all the second placed teams from the Group Stage as well, and who could be possibly in play for Liverpool’s draw.
Liverpool’s potential opponents in the next round are:
- Atletico Madrid
- Borussia Monchengladbach
- FC Barcelona
- FC Porto
- Lazio
- RB Leipzig
- Sevilla
Of course, Atletico Madrid knocked us out last season, so fans are either be torn between enacting revenge or having to endure another 180 minutes of dogged defending. They pipped RB Salzburg to second place in Group A with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday. The addition of Luis Suarez’s shithousery may make this fixture even more charged up than it really needs to be.
A historically significant opponent in our club’s history, Borussia Monchengladbach edged out Shakhtar Donetsk for second, despite a defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday. The Foals have been one of the more exciting young teams in the competition, highlighted by a pair of thumping (6-0 and 4-0) wins against Shakhtar.
FC Barcelona finished second to Juventus in Group G. They were tied on points but the Serie A giants had the better head to head record, after that 3-0 win. We’ve already done the reunion with Coutinho, and while they’re clearly a team on the decline, but Lionel Messi remains a scary proposition regardless of the team’s overall quality.
Another familiar foe in recent years, FC Porto finished runners-up in Group C, with a haul of 13 points, just 3 behind storied European juggernauts Manchester City.
One of the few opponents on this list we aren’t already sick of seeing, Lazio, with Liverpool old boys Lucas Leiva and Luis Alberto in tow, nabbed second in Group F behind Borussia Dortmund.
RB Leipzig humbled Manchester United 3-2, finishing behind PSG. The German side is one of the few teams we haven’t already faced, though we’ve had a couple of dealings in the transfer market.
Last but not least, Sevilla finished just one point behind Chelsea in Group E.
