The Liverpool captain bemoans a sloppy first half as the Reds drop points in the first match of 2021.

Jordan Henderson, who played out of position at centerback for the Reds tonight, explained his frustration to Sky Sports in his postmatch interview after the 1-0 defeat away to Southampton.

“The start didn’t help. When we’re starting slow in games it’s not us, and we’ve probably seen it a bit too many times at the minute, so that doesn’t help.”

He did recognize the side’s improvement after halftime, though that, too, came with some frustrations.

“The second half performance I thought was very good, but we don’t score again, which — well, in the last two games we’ve had some very good chances but haven’t put the ball in the back of the net, so that’s another issue.”

The skipper was disappointed, too, in his inability to explain the side’s poor start, as they had planned to make a statement early.

“We knew we needed to come out fast, but for whatever reason [we didn’t] — sloppy passes, causing one or two free kicks — and you get punished in this league.”

The Reds skipper suggested, finally, that the team would channel their frustrations in a healthy way.

“We’re frustrated, disappointed, but that happens in football — it’s how you deal with it as the main thing. So we’ve got an FA Cup game against Aston Villa and then in the league we’ve got Manchester United, so we’ve got to react quickly, and bounce back quickly, because as you say the last few games in terms of results have not been good enough.”
