Rumour Mongering: Sven Botman the Latest Centre Back on the Radar

This is going to be a theme over January.

So here’s the state of play.

Virgil van Dijk does his ACL and gets ruled out, most probably, for the rest of the season. That’s quite a big loss at centre back. The plan is for Joël Matip and Joe Gomez to soldier on at centre back with Fabinho filling in there.

And then, of course, Gomez also gets ruled out for the season. Because that’s just how it is this season. Matip, obviously, continues to struggle with his fitness issues as ever. So we’ve got Fabinho as the senior centre back ahead of Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.

So the rumour mill is going. More of the credible sources seem fairly insistent the Reds will not be signing a centre back, so take this all with a pinch of salt. But it’s the internet, so come on, what are you doing if not taking everything with a big heaping pile of sodium chloride.

Sven Botman is the name currently getting talked about. The 20 year old Lille centre back stands at a massive 6’4, so that’s good. I have never watched this man play football.

The Dutchman first got linked by Duncan Castles, who... yeah. The thing you have to know with Castles is that his actually strong sources tend to come from Gestifute, the Jorge Mendes-run agency. Mendes has a strong influence at Lille, so it’s entirely possible Castles would thus be the first to know about this. It’s also entirely possible Liverpool are just being used to shop Botman to wherever he actually ends up.

Kevin Palmer, who to my knowledge hadn’t previously broken many stories but was ahead of the curve on Thiago, ran further with it. Palmer claims that “sources close to Botman have indicated Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing him this month”.

But, here’s the twist!

Manchester United now look set to join the race for a player who has been compared to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk”.

Look, as I said, this stuff will run and run. Happy new year, shame that the world is so terrible right now, so at least enjoy the transfer shenanigans.
