Klopp Praises Liverpool’s ‘Dirty Three Points’ Against Atletico Madrid
A game that started well ended up a serious challenge for the Reds.
We’ve been bracing ourselves for another European showdown with Atletico Madrid since the groups were announced at the beginning of the season. This first of the two matches against Diego Simeone’s men did not disappoint.
Liverpool traveled to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium, and began with a bang. The Reds went up 2-0 by the 13th minute, but then slowly fell apart when faced with the quality of the competition. The first half ended all even at 2-2, and then the second half was a wild ride for fan and neutral alike. In the end, though, it was Liverpool who came away with all three points, while the Spanish team was left feeling aggrieved over big decisions going against them.
Jurgen Klopp, in his post-match interview, referred to the game as a ‘dirty three points’, but also insists that those “are very often the most important, and they were dirty tonight of course. It was not our best football but we got them and that’s a big step.”
To get over the line, Klopp said, “But we have quality, we have the quality to finish these situations off. The goals we scored were brilliantly done, really well played – Mo cutting inside, top shot, not sure if it was deflected or not, didn’t see it back yet. Then obviously the other goal, everybody is nearly in a perfect position there and for sure Naby is and a nice finish.”
Were it not for a 52nd minute red card issued to Antoine Griezmann, the game might have ended very differently. Were it not for the overturned penalty for Madrid, the game might have ended very differently. But Liverpool got the lucky calls on the night, and so they’ve got nine points and a perfect record that has them on top of their very tough group.
