Liverpool Handed Timely Double Fitness Boost
Two key midfielders returned to training ahead of a league clash with Brighton.
In a double dose of good news, Naby Keita and Thiago took part in training as both continue working their way back from injury.
Dwindling numbers in midfield had been the one aspect of Liverpool’s 23-match unbeaten run that had given Reds supporters pause, with the start of the week seeing Jurgen Klopp with three fit first team midfielders to call.
Already missing Harvey Elliot to long-term injury, his side had also lost Thiago in September’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, Fabinho to a minor knee complaint in a thrilling win over Atletico Madrid last week, and both Keita and James Milner during the historic 5-0 victory over Manchester United at the weekend.
“Brighton will be close, but probably not. He’s almost back, which is really important for us, of course,” Pep Lijnders said of Thiago on Tuesday.
A rapid return to training is especially good news for Keita, as the club had feared the worst when he had to be stretchered off following a nasty tackle from Paul Pogba.
While Milner has been ruled out until after the international break, Fabinho is not expected to miss any more time, although the Brazilian did not take part in training on Thursday.
With both Thiago and Fabinho likely fit enough to make the bench for Saturday’s league matchup with Brighton, Klopp will hopefully not be limited to only being able to field Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones, himself just returning from injury and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as his only options in the center of the park.
