Liverpool Look to Equal Another Record on Saturday
With the form Liverpool is in, every match seems to be a chance for a new record — and Saturday is no different
Brighton look to take points off Liverpool at home whilst coming into Saturday’s match with a good record of their own: against Liverpool, Brighton have won and drawn matches in their last two games against the Reds — after losing their first six meetings against the Reds.
Of course, last season’s team was struggling with serious injury problems throughout, and is thus perhaps not the most useful benchmark for judging patterns of form.
While Brighton are a skilled and well-coached side, Liverpool hope to continue their good form in the 2021/22 season. The Reds are the only unbeaten side remaining in Europe’s top leagues, and should they win or draw against the Seagulls the Reds will enter their third run of 20+ games unbeaten under manager Jürgen Klopp.
The Reds went 21 games between May and December 2018 and 44 games between January 2019 and February 2020 without defeat, and look to maintain the start to this season’s title challenge. For their part, Brighton look to lodge back-to-back victories versus Liverpool for the first time, having won 1-0 last time out.
Should Liverpool win or draw on Saturday, Klopp will become the third manager to have three separate 20+ game unbeaten runs, after Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United (six) and Arsène Wenger at Arsenal (four). The potential to join such names underscores the level of dominance Klopp’s side has produced, even if the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea are high level rivals in this campaign.
