Manchester United Quartet Could Miss Liverpool Clash
Liverpool are likely to face a shorthanded United when they travel to Old Trafford tomorrow.
A visit from Liverpool is probably not what Manchester United needs after failing to win their previous three Premier League matches. To make matter worse, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side could be facing the Reds without as many as four of their key contributors.
Raphaël Varane, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Fred are all dealing with injuries that could prevent them from suiting up for the matchup with LFC tomorrow.
Varane was injured while on international duty with France earlier this month and was ruled out for several weeks. Solskjær gave a vague update on the status of the Frenchman’s groin injury today, but he didn’t really give much of an indication of how likely it was Varane would be fit in time for kickoff. Given what little information is available, it seems like the center-back is doubtful for tomorrow at best.
Meanwhile, talismanic attacker Bruno Fernandes is also in doubt with an undisclosed injury picked up in United’s come from behind victory over Atalanta in the Champion’s League on Wednesday. He would almost certainly be the biggest miss of the injured players should he be unable to make an appearance.
Joining Fernandes as doubts thanks to the injuries picked up in costly win against Atalanta are winger Marcus Rashford and midfielder Fred. Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Solskjær admitted he was unsure how many of the three would be available, but it’s possible none of them will be.
While none of the injuries sound serious, the quick turnaround of playing on Sunday after picking up a knock on Wednesday does make it difficult to say how likely any of Fernandes, Rashford, or Fred are to face Liverpool.
All four injured players are likely to be game-time decisions, so we probably won’t know how many of them, if any, will be fit enough to play until the lineups are announced shortly before kickoff. The Reds are a confident bunch thanks to their recent form, so they should be chomping at the bit to get at a shorthanded United side.
