Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Interested as Tielemans Rejects Leicester
Youri Tielemans’ contract ends in 2023 and the midfielder is rumoured not to want to extend his stay with Leicester City.
Last summer, Liverpool were linked with Youri Tielemans as a potential Gini Wijnaldum replacement but with a reported £60M-plus price tag and youngsters Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones impressing in pre-season the Reds chose to stick with their in house options.
Tielemans, though, will have just one year left to run on his Leicester City contract at the end of the current season and reports out of Holland have the Dutch international rejecting the club’s attempts this year to broker a new deal for their star 24-year-old midfielder.
That means that next summer, Leicester are likely to be faced with a choice between getting what they can for Tielemans or holding on to him for one more year and losing him on a free in the summer of 2023. And that means Liverpool are again being talked about.
According to Voetbal24, the Reds are one of three sides in England with strong interest in the player—with Chelsea and Manchester United the others—and are strong contenders to sign him. Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Bayern Munich are also said to hold interest.
That level of interest would surely drive up the player’s price despite his contract status, though Tielemans seems certain to go for less in the summer of 2022 than he would have in 2021 when many of the same clubs were said to be interested but nothing happened.
For their part, after sticking with what they had this past summer, a number of aging players in midfield—as well as some with ongoing injury question marks—could mean the Reds will have little choice but to seek out an impact signing at the end of the current campaign.
