Salah Approaching Premier League’s African Scoring Record
Mohamed Salah’s next goal will see him match Didier Drogba’s record at 104 goals.
Mohamed Salah’s incredible form has already earned him several records and milestones this season. He became the first Premier League player to score in five consecutive season-opening matches in August. Then, he scored his 100th PL goal and 100th PL goal for Liverpool in quick succession in September, reaching the latter milestone faster than any other LFC player ever has.
The next record in his sights will surpass all of the other records and milestones he’s achieved this season though. Salah currently sits at 103 PL goals. One more, and he will match Didier Drogba’s record for most goals scored by an African player in the Premier League.
The former Chelsea striker helped the Blues to four league titles and their first-ever Champion’s League title, and he is one of the best goalscorers of the Premier League era. To match his tally would be a huge accomplishment for Liverpool’s Egyptian star, and it’s even more impressive when looking at how quickly he’s reached this point.
The Ivorian scored his 104 goals over 254 PL matches. If Salah scores against Watford tomorrow, he will have scored his 104 in just 166 matches. To match the record in roughly 60% of the matches it took Drogba would be quite the achievement, especially considering the Chelsa man was a traditional striker and Salah plays on the wing.
Even if he doesn’t manage to even things up with Drogba tomorrow, Salah’s recent form seems to suggest he will not only match the record but break it in short order. It’s a testament to how sensational he has been since joining the Reds in 2017, and it will be fun to see just how far he can push the African goal-scoring record by the time all is said and done.
