Loris Karius Reportedly To Be Set Free In January
David Lynch of The Mirror reports that Liverpool will terminate the keeper’s contract early to let him search for a new club. It’s a disappointing end to the Liverpool career of a player once hoped to be the long term solution in goal.
Loris Karius. Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in quite some time. The German keeper has been out of the picture for Liverpool since Alisson was brought in from Roma during the summer of 2018.
Since the disastrous 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid that saw the keeper take blows to the head from ultimate heel Sergio Ramos, Karius has gone out on a series of unremarkable loan spells to Besiktas and Union Berlin in search of some semblance of confidence and form. Instead, the full time keeper and part time Instagram model has been sent back to Liverpool each time with no interest from his parent club for a permanent deal.
With his contract set to expire next summer, Liverpool made one last push to get some return for the player this past summer, either on loan or with a permanent deal. Despite interest from FC Basel, no deal was done due to his wage packet.
Karius is well down the pecking order of keepers for Liverpool at the moment, with Alisson and CaoimhÃn Kelleher entrenched as the top two players in the position, and team dad Adrian a very solid third choice. There are some good young keepers working their way through the ranks as well, so it would have been a minor miracle for Karius to see any time this season. Unfortunately, he has been out with an shoulder injury for much of the fall according to the Liverpool Echo, so even the hope of finding the bench for a cup match was dashed.
“I’ve been out for about six weeks and I’ll try to re-join training after the international break and get back in top shape,” Karius was quoted in the Liverpool Echo. “And then we’ll see what will happen in the winter.”
According to David Lynch of The Mirror, Liverpool have determined their course of action. Rather than try to find a short term loan or keep Karius around for the rest of the season, Lynch is reporting that Liverpool will terminate the contract of Karius this winter, allowing him to move elsewhere on a Bosman.
It’s an unfulfilling end to the Liverpool career of the player who was once hoped to be the answer in goal. Let’s hope Karius can find a club where he can earn some playing time and be happy staring forlornly into the middle distance.
