Official: Joe Gomez Signs New Five-Year Deal
The Liverpool centre half has extended his stay at Anfield through the summer of 2027.
Joe Gomez represents Liverpool’s future at centre half and the club sent a strong signal confirming as much today as the 25-year-old defender put pen to paper on a new five-year deal that locks him down through the summer of 2027.
It didn’t take long for news the player saw his long-term future at Anfield and was open to a new deal to turn into an announcement of one, with Liverpool continuing to move quickly this summer to ensure a second period as one of English and European football’s dominant sides under Jürgen Klopp.
“It is an unbelievable place to be, probably one of the best—if not the best—clubs in the world,” Gomez said of his decision to recommit to the Reds. “The opportunity to extend my stay here was an easy decision to make, really.
“Obviously, I have been here quite a while now, but in the grand scheme of things I still feel young and the best years are ahead of me. I have got more to learn and the time to do that. I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates.”
Gomez had appeared to have won the job of partnering Virgil van Dijk with an impressive 2019-20 campaign only to see his next season derailed by injury. Last season, though, saw him begin to work his way back into the rotation and up the depth chart.
He heads into 2022-23 as fourth choice behind Van Dijk, Joël Matip, and Ibrahima Konaté but remains a player who would walk into the starting lineup of most other Premier League sides, speaking to the enviable—and arguably unmatched in Europe—depth Liverpool have at the position.
That situation had led to some speculation that Gomez’ future might lie away from Anfield, but he’s already shown once that he has the talent to start every week for one of the best sides in football and will now set out, new contract in hand, to prove that again.
