Liverpool Goalkeeping Coach Achterberg to Depart at Season’s End
John Achterberg is the latest Liverpool coach to confirm he will departing along with Jürgen Klopp at the end of the 2023-24 season.
When a new manager arrives at a club, staff changeover is normal with many of the of the supporting coaches and medical staff often departing along with the old manager while the new one brings at least some of his trusted team in with him.
Often, though, there are holdovers. There certainly were when Jürgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool, with the likes of current assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders and goalkeeper coach John Achterberg carried over from the Brendan Rodgers era.
It appears, though, there may be no significant support staff retentions as Klopp prepares to depart and Arne Slot arrives. That following news today that Achterberg, one of the few coaches not previously announced as departing, is also leaving.
Achterberg has been with the club now for 15 years, and when previous goalkeepers including Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius failed to meet fan expectations it was often, rather strangely, the coach who received much of the criticism.
The arrival of the world class Alisson Becker between the sticks rather put an end to that, and Achterberg has become more known in recent seasons as one of the more excitable coaches on the bench when Liverpool score an important goal.
Whether Slot will bring in his own team to coach the goalkeepers or if the departure will lead to the promotion of current number two Jack Robinson is unclear, as is what the future holds for Brazilian legend and part-time coach Claudio Taffarel.
