Nunez Speaks on Social Media Abuse
Seriously, leave the dude alone.
Darwin Nunez may very well be the most overanalysed player in recent Liverpool FC history. Earlier in the month, he deleted all mentions and pictures of the Reds from his Instagram page, amid threats made to his family. Most recently, the stupidest parts of Liverpool Twitter decided to hone in on him not clapping for Klopp during the departing manager’s guard of honour, and his body language during Jürgen’s final team talk. (He had his head in his hands and looked overcome with emotion.)
Speaking to Por la Jersey via ESPN Uruguay, he talked about the impact of social media negativity on him, and what he’s doing to handle it:
“From the moment you start playing and until you retire, there will always be someone who will criticise you. Before, I did look at them a lot and it affected me. Whoever says that those negative comments do not affect them is lying, those negative comments that are directed towards you will always affect you.”
“They tell me everything, but I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me. I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I’m not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family. When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it’s already happened, and there is always revenge.”
But seriously, leave the man alone. If he’s truly unhappy, he’s going to leave regardless. There’s no need to hound and chase the man out of the club. He’s been a productive player this season, even if that doesn’t match up to certain fans’ expectations.
