Previous reports suggested a permanent deal—which would be Liverpool’s preference—but the German club are said to prefer a loan.

Following a pair of highly successful loans to Championship sides, including a standout 2023-24 spent with Hull City, 21-year-old Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton appears primed to take the next step in his career.

The question, though, is whether that next step might be with Liverpool or if he’s set to depart the club again. The most intriguing chatter so far this summer has revolved around interest from Germany’s RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga side have been linked reliably with Morton, with Liverpool-connected journalists suggesting a permanent deal is being discussed. Now, though, reports from the Leipzig end suggest they prefer a loan.

Given how well Morton played at Hull last season, it might be fair to wonder why a loan would be Leipzig’s preference and not Liverpool’s. However, Fabio Carvalho’s recent loan experience there might hint at why.

A loan to a Championship club might guarantee playing time for a player of Morton’s calibre. On the other hand, a loan to a top four side in Germany who aren’t fully invested in the player’s development doesn’t.

After failing to stick at Leipzig last season, Carvalho’s loan was terminated—and he paired up with Morton at Hull in the second half. A similar experience with Leipzig for Morton this season would do nobody any good.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s willingness to explore another departure for the player—whether it ends up permanent or not—suggests they still see Stefan Bajcetic ahead of Morton despite his injury struggles last season.
