Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Reject Reports of Saudi Van Dijk Interest
Following claims Al Nassr were laying the foundations to sign Virgil van Dijk the Reds have—as expected—shut them down.
Last summer, Saudi Pro League clubs came to Liverpool to buy midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson—and to try to pry superstar forward Mohamed Salah away from the club. This summer, it appears likely there will be more Saudi links at the very least.
Following rumours at the end of the season of Pro League interest in goalkeeper Alisson Becker, this week brings with it whispers that Al Nassr—current home of Ronaldo and ex-Red Sadio ManĆ©—would be interested in signing Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.
Despite suggestions from the Saudi end that conversations may already started, today has brought with it the expected rumour rebuttal from the Liverpool direction saying nothing of the sort has happened and that such a deal wouldn’t be one the club considers.
One potential complication is that Van Dijk is entering into the final year of his contract and at 32 years of age is likely at the tail end of his prime years—a new deal, then, seems needed but under the circumstances there’s a risk the sides won’t see eye to eye.
Still, with Van Dijk back to his best during the 2023-24 season, it’s hard to see how the Reds would gain from selling a player who is in the conversation for best centre half in the world and the expectation will be that he will remain part of their plans moving forward.
