Premier League Round-Up: Schadenfreude Supreme
A bad day at the office for a couple of LFC rivals opens up the chance for an extra long round of week-long gloating.
A plus side of not getting the early kick-off - besides getting sleep, for those of us on the North American West Coast anyway - is that we get to tune in and see the results from other matches help to shape the look of the Premier League table around us. Yes, it’s still early days but what is a footy fan to do on a Saturday to while away the hours until kick-off? Track the results and story lines, that’s what!
On to the results!
Tottenham 4 - Everton 0; Brighton 2 - Manchester United 1: The Enemy of my Enemy is My Friend
Great results for Liverpool FC fans with Spurs and Brighton managing to nab all three points against Everton and Manchester United, respectively. In the Spurs-Everton match, famous rejector of blunders Jordan Pickford committed, well, a massive blunder which lead to Spurs’ second goal of the match as Son Heung-Min beat the Everton man to a ball in the box and smashed it in. It was particularly great because it happened due to a heavy touch that meant the ball rolled across Pickford’s own body at a rate faster than he expected. And Pickford would always be expected to lose that footrace. Long may Pickford’s words haunt him.
In Brighton, new Seagulls manager Fabian Hürzeler kept his perfect start to Premier League life with a stoppage time win over Erik Ten-Hag’s Manchester United. The winner from Joāo Pedro came on the back of a strong performance - Pedro also earned an assist for Brighton opener - and was at the end of a positive move for the Seagulls. United’s defense will go into training next week holding the brunt of the blame as new bot Matthjiz de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez both managed to lose the Brazilian striker who had all the time in the world to play the ball back across the United goal for the winner.
Other Notable Results: Manchester City 4 - Ipswich Town 1; Aston Villa 0 - Arsenal 2
Liverpool’s most likely rivals for the title both earned three points in their respective matches on Saturday. Manchester City continued Ipswich Town’s difficult early education on the level of quality in the Premier League by doling out a second straight loss to the Tractor Boys. Meanwhile, Unai Emery was unable to continue last season’s run against his former club, where he did the double against Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners managed to put together a comfortable and professional 2-nil victory over Aston Villa.
Tomorrow’s matches include a Chelsea match where new Blue Pedro Neto faces off against former club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Of course, though, all eyes will be on the Reds as they take on Brentford in the last match of the weekend. Once that’s done, focus will likely turn to the impending transfer deadline as Richard Hughes and Co. will finally answer if Liverpool will bring any new players onboard during this window. A big week ahead, Reds!
