Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Set Wednesday Deadline for Zubimendi Deal

Previous reports had suggested the weekend was the deadline.

Around a week ago now, news broke that Liverpool were attempting to sign Real Sociedad and Spain star defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with the transfer story developing at breakneck speed over 24 hours.

The next six or days by comparison have been stagnant. Nthing much has really changed from day to day as we cycle through stories of the clubs negotiating and Zubimendi himself trying to decide if he should leave his boyhood club.

It isn’t entirely unexpected. The hold Basque clubs often have on their players has always made getting them a tougher task for Europe’s heavy hitters than poaching players from other mid-table sides in top leagues.

Still, when news of the transfer attempt went public, the assumption was it was all but done and reports that the player was on board—despite previously rejecting Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich—seemed to confirm as much.

Only it didn’t happen and, as the weekend approached, the story became that Sunday was the deadline for the Reds. They needed to know one way or the other, and if they didn’t they needed to move on to other targets.

Now, the weekend is over. And instead of an answer, we’ve got new reports from Basque outlets saying the deadline is now Wednesday—and a growing feeling amongst Reds fans the longer this drags, the less likely it is to happen.
