Liverpool’s star right back reflected on Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over AC Milan and life under new head coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool started slowly in their first game back in the Champions League after a season away from the European limelight, conceding a third minute goal to AC Milan as part of a worrying opening ten minutes.

Once they did click into gear, though, worrying quickly turned into dominating play, and by the time the final whistle blew their margin of victory could have been far more lopsided than it was. After the match, Trent Alexander-Arnold reacted to the game—and Liverpool’s return to the competition.

“I think this club belongs in the Champions League with the history it’s had and it was disappointing last year to not be a part of it,” the homegrown star said following Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory at the San Siro.

“But we’re back where we belong back in it now and there’s no better way to get the campaign started than with a win here at the San Siro. It’s just a special venue, a special stadium, and an unbelievable result.”

After an impressive start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot that saw the Reds win their opening three Premier League matches by a combined margin of 7-0, Liverpool stumbled on the weekend in a 1-0 defeat at Anfield to expected relegation-battlers Nottingham Forest.

That made their reaction to going down a goal early all the more impressive, and while Liverpool under Slot may be a work in progress, Alexander-Arnold says that he’s enjoying the new manager’s take on tactics.

“I had a short time off this summer after the Euros and then back into it, so I think for me it was just excitement to work under a new manager,” he added. “Speaking to the manager I was excited for the plans and the way he talked.

“There’s different variations he gives us—information through the week, through the game, leading up to it. He paints scenarios so we have an answer for everything, so if they press this way then this is where we’re going to be positioned like this. There’s a solution to every problem they pose.”
