The Liverpool captain opened up on his contract situation and said an extension is being worked on following the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

Liverpool are in top form under new head coach Arne Slot, but one niggling thread of negativity that just won’t go away two months into the 2024-25 season are concerns over the contract status of three of their top stars.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, superstar forward Mohamed Salah, and generational local talent Trent Alexander-Arnold are all on deals expiring at the end of the season—which means all three could potentially leave the club for nothing.

“I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but we will see what happens in the future,” Van Dijk said following Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea that ensured the Reds ended the matchweek top of the Premier League Table.

“My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win the games that are ahead of me and nothing else. What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have been started and we will see.”

It marks the first time one of the trio has acknowledged—either publicly or via briefing to the press—that a new contract is being actively worked on and for that alone it seems a quite positive update given the circumstances.

“I feel very good physically and mentally and I am having fun,” he added. “Discussions are ongoing and when it’s time to make a decision I think you guys will know it as well. But for now my full focus is to be successful this season.”
