Andy Robertson On “Special” Achievement Following Late Scotland Goal
Robertson scored the late winner in a 2-1 victory over Poland in what was his 80th appearance for Scotland.
On Monday night, Liverpool left back and Scotland captain Andy Robertson scored his nation’s game winning goal in stoppage time against Poland to end their Nations League adventure with a victory.
Beyond the simple rarity of a Robertson marker, it was a goal to mark his 80th Scotland appearance in the same stadium he made his international debut a decade ago, making it an extra special moment for the player.
“This stadium holds a special place in my heart,” Robertson said following the 2-1 victory. “I made my debut here, which was the proudest moment of my career. I didn’t know how many caps I was going to get after that.
“To come back here now, be top three [in total Scotland appearances], I’m not a very emotional person but I just love playing for this country and to be able to get one cap, never mind 80, is such a special feeling.
“The goal was the cherry on top in the last minute. Probably nobody expected that. I wish I scored more for my country because that feeling is like no other. Hopefully maybe there’s a couple more to come.”
Monday’s victory means Scotland finish third in their group and face a relegation playoff to avoid demotion to the second-tier League B, with Poland’s defeat leaving them fourth and automatically relegated.
